Veteran Hariharan kick starts the proceedings with a heartfelt rendered number 'Kuch Der Tak' that has everything from lyrics to tune to singing going in its favor. When you hear what Sameer has to say in this number, you end up wondering why filmmakers in Bollywood are not tapping this soulful side of his immense potential? A beautifully composed love ballad for which the music video is also out on prominent music channels, 'Kuch Der Tak' is a number that can be heard in peace repeatedly.
Newcomer Sangeet sings the number 'I Am So Lonely'. And no, the number doesn't have anything to do with the namesake English number, even though the title of the two songs is same. A pop number that relies on the power of melody, it brings Sangeet to a good platform as he goes ahead with this solo quite comfortably and fits in well with the youthful mood of the song. Even though the theme of the number revolves around a guy belong lonely, it doesn't drag one bit and keeps you interested in hearing out the his tale.
Looking at Shaan on the credits is good enough reason to look forward to the number which follows next. 'Aao Is Tarah' has western arrangements opening the proceedings but what comes next is quite shocking since the song turns out to be quite disappointing. Agreed that the album's theme revolves around lonely hearts and the songs are meant to have an undercurrent of sadness, but 'Aao Is Tarah' is outright depressing. For those who have lost in love and don't see many hopes in life to come, 'Aao Is Tarah' may be a real-life hearing but for others, it is recommended as a number that should be an absolute no-no.
Roopkumar Rathod, who has sung one of the best numbers in recent times, 'Maula Mere' [Anwar], is heard once again in 'Jahan Tera Chehra'. The way the number begins, it seems like a follow up to 'Aao Is Tarah' which sounds a little scary after the experience moments back. Shamir Tandon composes the track in the same mould as ever-so-popular 'Aur Is Dil Mein Kya Rakha Hai' which was picturised on Sanjay Dutt two decades back. 'Jahan Tera' has an obvious filmy appeal to it and overall turns out to be better than 'Aao Is Tarah', though not being exceptional.
Wow, Suresh Wadkar is back. One is forced to exclaim so as soon as the singer's name blazes from the credits of the song 'Tumse Pehle'. The cheers continue as the song turns out to be the best bet after 'Kuch Der Tak' that came way back at the beginning of the album. Yet another number with 'filmy' written all over it, it sounds pretty 80-ish but is still a decent hear. A song about you are the one and only one in my life, 'Tumse Pehle' is raised due to a certain level mainly due to Wadkar being at the helm.
"It's difficult to spend a moment without you as I continue to remember you forever" - this is what 'Chain Se Ek Pal' is meant to convey as it takes forward the sad theme of the album. Based on Indian classical music with light western arrangements taking the song forward, there is a voiceover by a female artist that accompanies the number throughout. Again, a number only for those who want to have a quite sob in isolation.
A haunting beginning to 'Woh Raat Din' makes you look forward to what's next in store. Ravindra Upadhyay and Shabab Sabri bring different styles if singing as they sing with each other this song about remembering the old times. There is an 'enigma'-tic feel to this entire track which succeeds in its endeavor i.e. make you look into the past and drop a tear or two in the remembrance of the one you loved most. At this point, one is forced to think if a song like this warranted Jagjit Singh at the helm?
After 7 original numbers come 3 tracks that have been heard before over the years. First to come is the ever-popular 'Tanha Dil' by Shaan that is unforgettable even till today and would be unforgettable for many more years to come. Shubha Mudgal's 'Soona Soona' from the album 'Nachoon Sari Sari Raat' is heard next while Ustad Sultan Khan's ever-so-haunting 'Kaate Nahin Raat' from the album 'Bhoomi' marks the completion of the album. The last song especially proves what greats are made of as 'Kaate Nahin Raat' is just an ideal culmination to the album.
If you are happy in love and have no complains whatsoever, 'Tanhai' is certainly not the album for you. On the other hand if all you want is an album that would accompany you in your sorrows, 'Tanhai' may just be the right bet. Though not all the numbers are striking an overtly impressive, at least 'Kuch Der Tak', 'I Am So Lonely', 'Jahan Tera' and 'Tumse Pehle' can be given a hear. Also, 'Tanha Dil' and 'Kaate Nahin Raat' are a welcome bonus.
